Broke the Record in June!!!

Chuck outdid himself in the month of June–hauling both females and males to the Vets to be spayed, and then back home again.  Yes, he is tired, but glad to get some more of the dogs altered so that they can find their new families. Missy (aka Spotty), the Mama of the Fairy Tale puppies should be ready to go in another week. Chloe,is a new one (a gorgeous black shiny Boxer/Lab mix,  Jingles, Mona, Buddy, Page & Vinnie are some of the dogs that made the trip and are recovering. Some are ready to go to families now and others need just a few more days. 

Maybe some day, we will have a mobile spay/neuter clinic in our area, but for right now–we try and keep up and spay and neuter a few each month.Image

It is Time!

Looking for a sweet gal to make part of your family. Well, Ginger could be the one. Ginger is a Siberian Husky mix. She is 18 months old and has gorgeous blue eyes.  We will call her a special needs dogs, because she needs lots of love and attention.  Ginger should probably live on a farm or acreage, and should be the only dog, or maybe just one other dog that would be kind to her.  Some of the dogs at 12 Hills have decided that they don’t like her and it is causing her to feel rejected and sad, and consequently chose to runaway and find a new home.  We have her back, but we feel that She needs a new loving home right away!!!

Ginger has been spayed, loves children, people and attention. She doesn’t jump on you or get in your face.  If Ginger could be your new family member, give us a call.

BIG DOGS EVERYWHERE!

Do you like BIG dogs??? We have a few at 12 Hills Dog Rescue that are looking for loving homes with a new family.  Rex is one of the biggest young dog  we have ever had. We are guessing him to be 1 year old and his breed is a mystery to everyone here.  Today, Rex is being neutered and should be home at 12 Hills tomorrow.

We also have Loki—a year old Great Pyranese mix that needs a new home. He should be out in the country, so he can run and play.  Alaska is a young female mix that is a larger breed dog.  She is white with black spots.  Her breed is also a mystery, but could be a Lab mix.

MORE BIG EARS AT 12 HILLS!

We also have Buck–Burt’s brother at 12 Hills.  His ears aren’t standing up!  Are they going to?  We are unsure, but Buck is a beautiful German Shepherd mix also.  We also have Andre, Tater, Snicker and Doodle that have BIG EARS!  They are all German Shepherd mixes. Take a look and give us a call.

We have quite a few doggies at 12 Hills that have BIG EARS!  Puppies and teens and grown-ups all here at the rescue. Some are German Shepherds, others we are unsure of their breed. It doesn’t matter—all are nice dogs and maybe just maybe one of those BIG EARED dogs will be the dog for your family. Here is a picture of Burt–the GermanImage,

Doodles is a brother of Snicker and Tater. He is also one of the wild puppies that we have been working with.  Still a little wary of people, but I think it is time to move him on to a patient, loving family.  They seem to like kids and other doggies, so that will help them transition.

Big Ears Everywhere!

It seems that lately a number of dogs that have arrived at 12 Hills have huge ears that stand at attention! What does that tell you???  Guess we have a variety of German Shepherd mixes at the rescue.  Three of the boys with those big ears are Snicker, Doodle and Tater.  They came to us–straight from swamp land around 7 weeks old.  There Mom is German Shepherd, and their Dad????, well you know the story. Unknown!   We have been working with them each day and a great dog, Choco the boxer has been training them socially in dealing with animals and people. 

Now, they should be moving on to their families.  What kind of families?? Ones that will be able to spend special time with them, loving and being patient with their shyness.  No, they don’t trust all people yet, but growing to trust us and are licking our hands and allowing us to pet them. 

If you like their looks and have the patience and love to share–come and meet Snicker, Doodle, and Tater and maybe just maybe, they will win your heart and one of them will go home with you.Image

What a Nice Guy!

Blackie is one of those dogs that you can rave about.  He came to 12 Hills Dog Rescue several months ago. He had been picked up by animal control, and no one came to claim him.  Why?? He is a loving, loyal and gets along great with all the other dogs here.  He would make a great family dog, and very loyal.  Why does he get overlooked? Maybe I am not doing my job telling everyone and showing his beauty.  So here he is Blackie, the Husky/Chow.Image

They are characters! hoping that they will find their new homes this weekend.  They like to play in the Lilies—well they used to be Lilies, anyway.  Some are very outgoing and two are a little shy. My granddaughter is holding them for their pictures.  She takes a better picture than I do.Image

It is so Awesome to See How Dogs Train One Another

I have time to think and to watch while I am cleaning the kennels.  It dawned on me that many of the dogs here at 12 Hills socialize and train each other.  Sandy, welcomes and gives special attention to the sad puppies coming in.  Bertha has been here awhile—and welcomed Choco–playing ball with him and wrestling.  Choco is training Snicker and Doodle (our feral dogs) to trust people and to run and play in the kennel.  I could go on and on. 

Tyla (female black Lab) came out of the kennel this week and Pee Wee reprimands her when she jumps on me.  I am hoping that the training works for her and she learns to stay on all fours. 

These observations or discoveries may not be interesting or news to anyone–but thought I would share them—like I said, lots of time to think when in the kennel. Doodle came out of the kennel and sat by Ursula the German Shepherd. Guess he adopted her.Image

BIG & LITTLE–a GREAT week for adoptions!

12 Hills had a great week adopting puppies and grown doggies the last few days. We were able to find Ezzy her new home as well, as Moose and his Mom. We are hoping that this week will work out just as well. Puppies are always adorable, but the teens and older, are still waiting for the special families to come and see just how special they are.

I Love Fairy Tales

I guess the Librarian comes out in me–several times a day, and naming the doggies is no different. Missy (aka Spotty) had 7 or the most beautiful puppies, and what do we name them?
When you run a rescue–we sometimes need inspiration for our names. Hence, the Seven Dwarfs came on the scene. These puppies are adorable—friendly, healthy and ready for their new forever homes. They are going on line today–with their new names, so now if I can just match the name to their picture! Here is a picture of Sneezy—one of the little females.

Ashleigh Loves Buttons

Ashleigh loved Buttons and held her most of the time during her visit at 12 Hills Dog Rescue.  Buttons is a cutie, and a very special little gal. She is going to be a small doggie.  We will be taking her for a consultation with the Veterinary. She has 2 hernias and they will need to be fixed, before she can be adopted.

Ashleigh knew right away that Buttons is a special little gal.

A Great Visit from Stevie

What a great time it was having Stevie Nelsen, his sister Ashleigh and their Mom, came for a visit at 12 Hills Dog Rescue. Stevie and Ashleigh had a good time with the doggies, especially Buttons.  Buttons thought it was super to be held and carried around and she gave them lots of kisses.

We took more pictures and one in particular with Stevie and the pallet of LIfe’s Abundance dog food that was donated to 12 Hills Dog Rescue.  We want to thank Stevie and his family and Laura Bunch owner of LIfe’s Abandance for the wonderful donation

Here is our beautiful Ezmarelda—We call her Ezzie!! She is recovering from being spayed—and should be ready for her new home by this weekend. Ezzie has had several litters of puppies, but now is ready to be out on her own with no puppy responsibilities.  Ezzie loves people and would make a great companion dog for a single family or couple.  She loves the outdoors and likes to just hang out.Image

Found in a swampy area—wild–hungry—and in need of a home with a special family that can give lots of attention and patience.  Snicker and his brother Doodles are ready for that special home. NOW!  They are still somewhat wild, but are getting better.  We believe they will do better if separated and go to their forever homes soon. Here are their pictures!ImageImage

Gettting Ready for our BIG Day!!!

Busy doesn’t even explain how I feel–tomorrow is the vendor show at Dakota City from 10 –2 and we are having a table for 12 Hills Dog Rescue.  We are getting busy with our paperwork, photo album and a basket for the raffle.  Should be a fun day for us, though and a great opportunity for people to meet us and find out more about our rescue.  Guess I had better get busy and take more pictures for the album–Just maybe we will have some doggies adopted.  I do hope to have Clover—our Mascot present, so she can meet everyone.  Hope to see you there!

Ready tor the Vendor Show???

Not really–need to take more pictures and decide who is going with us on the 21st. Oh, did I forget to mention that we will be attending a Vender show on Sat. April 21st at Dakota City, NE., fire hall?  We have never done this before, so I am a little taken back on what to do first to be prepared.

Well, I already made some delicious homemade dog treats.  We did a taste comparison and I feel the peanut butter ones were the most liked by our dogs.  I did make some bacon balls, so those will probably go quickly.also.

Back to the preparations—I will need to take pictures or copy and put descriptions with each dog for a photo album I want to take along. We are going to have several of the puppies there, and also one or 2 big Dogs.  I think that Sarge will be one going. He loves everyone—and should do well in a crowd. 

Better sign off and get busy on the photo albums. Hope to see you there—it starts at 9:00 on Sat. 21st.

Two Steps Forward——-One Back???

Sometimes we feel that way at 12 Hills Dog Rescue.  Right now, we have too many big dogs, and need a way to move them to another area–where they may have a better chance at adoption.

But on the bright side–Bandit found his new forever home this week as well as Brownie.  Bandit’s family love him already–and hopefully Brownie will fit in to her family nicely also.

Then we received a new little gal.  She looks like she is around 5 months old. What a beauty with all 4 white socks.  Her name is Sonya and she is a orange color with a white blaze on her chest.  Better yet, she was in a home with children, so that is an extra plus. Will take pictures today and post one soon. Just wanted to keep you updated on our progress and get the word out about the beautiful big dogs we still have waiting for homes.

This Shouldn’t Be Happening!

Poor little gal came walking out of the dirty creek, along side her house. She is malnourished, mangy, and what else we are unsure of at this time. She was brought to us by a local police officer. She received a warm bath and treatment and was combed to remove all the scales.  She is a pretty little gal that will need at least a month of treatment before she is ready to go.  I named her Sarah. She appears to be the sister to a little black guy that came here in March.

This puppy has been very neglected. The owner should not be able to have another dog–and we hope that the owner will receive a fine for neglect and abuse.

Neuter Day at 12 Hills

Another 2 males are done–neutered that is.  Now they should be ready for their new families and forever homes.  It seems that their attitudes become so much calmer after their surgery.  Sometimes it takes almost a month to see the difference, and sometimes it happens in a few days.Regardless, both Maximus and Kevin had their surgery today and will hopefully be adopted in the near future.

There are some who believe that male dogs should never be neutered, but we see a huge difference in dogs after the hormones settle down.  Now if we could get others in the community to spay and neuter their pets–all would be good.Image

Look, Grammie, Come look at the little cow puppies

They do look like cows with all their black spots.  We have 5 black and white ones and 2 liver colored one.  And today we noticed their freckles are appearing.  Spotty is such a good mother and watches over them night and day.  The puppies were born on Wednesday, April 4th.

The grandkids loved watching them be born and  wanted to name them already.  We said they had to at least wait until their eyes are open and they show some personality.  Look for their pictures as they grow.Image

Another Page Turned

Should I or shouldn’t I? That question has been looming over me lately. It all started when a cute little puppy was brought into the library by Bill and Bob.  They had gotten the new puppy from a friend and was she ever adorable. Everyone gathered around and gave her lots of hugs and pats and I got out the dog food and a bowl of water.

Maybe I should stop and explain–our village library is probably like none other, in the sense that is more of a community/youth center when the doors are open. Of course, they are only open 11 hours a week, but that is again another story.

So, this little gal was brought in each week and she was doing great until one night, she appeared in front of the library door wanting in after hours.  So, I picked her up and drove around attempting to find the boys or their parents.  No luck, so I took her home to our rescue.  3 days later, after no phone calls, I took her back to the library with me. We had given the first vaccination, wormed and bathed her. She was beautiful, and when the boys and others came in they were glad to see her.

Thinking I had a prime opportunity to teach about dog care and responsibility, I had a bill all made out showing them what we had done for her and telling them they needed to work off the amount owed.  It didn’t seem to sink in, so off they went home with their puppy. I went home discouraged and wondering why I had failed at teaching them responsibility.

Two weeks later, I received a call and Page (her new name) was wandering the streets again, while the kids were in school. She had appeared at the library and was looking for her safe place. She was attempting to get into cars and people were afraid she would be run over.  This time I waited 4 days with( no one from the family calling) and took her back to the library.  After school, they bailed in happy to see Page.They didn’t ask why I had her, but expected me to hand her over.  I gave them a stern talking to, but of course, they just wanted their puppy back. This time, I took her home with the idea, she would be Page, Library Dog. The boys would have the best of both worlds.  They could see her and love her, and she would be taken care of.  Of course, her name Page, fit right into my new scheme.

So, we tried the library a couple times and she didn’t do all that well. She barked when people came in and sometimes scared them.   She wasn’t happy on a leash—so I took her home and now the boys are wondering, where is their dog, Page? My plan for Page and teaching responsibility has failed.  After much soul searching, I am thinking I should have a good talk with Bill and Bob, and their parents, and put her on our adoption list.  She isn’t like Dewey the library cat.  She is going to be a big dog, that will require training and special attention. More time than I have, right now.

Maybe I should try a bird as our Library mascot next time.

Is It Time Yet?? Is ItTime Yet?? Come on–we are Ready for our Run!

When the dogs come out of their kennels, they are ready for their daily exercise. (We call it their run).  They love following Chuck with his 4-WD Mule to the highest hill on our farm. Their they romp and play and wrestle, and then come back and sit beside him for extra attention. How does he do it?? I don’t know, but he manages to give each dog special time and they look forward to it every day. When they arrive back to the kennels, they will be clean and fresh dog food waiting for each of them.  Image

On this day, he wasn’t quite ready to go, but you can see by the picture, they are more than ready!
