Charlie seemed like a fitting name for this little guy. At first I thought he was a purebred dashound, but he may be mixed. At 12 Hills, we don’t mind if they are a purebred or not. In fact, most of the doggies that come in are mixes, and they make wonderful pets. Charlie appears to be around a year old, and will need to be neutered soon. He likes to sit on your lap and gives great kisses. He would be a great companion for a couple or a family with children 9 years and up. Give us a call about Charlie.

WHAT? A TALKING DOG?
Buddy came to us from a local animal control and there the story begins. First of all, when he arrived, we noticed he looked very similar in age and breed to another sweet boy “Benny”. Buddy began his days at 12 Hills Dog Rescue in a kennel surrendered by kennels and other dogs. After a few weeks, he was out and about on the farm, and we discovered what a talker he actually was. He only talked to Brenda, but they seemed to have some interesting conversations. I was just a bit envious until I found that he will talk to me, also. How often do you find a dog that converses with you? That just shows what an awesome personality Buddy has. Maybe he will talk to you if you give him the opportunity.
Buddy is ready for his new family. He has been neutered and received all of his vaccinations. Call us if you want to meet Buddy.
ADVENTURE ENDS IN A CLOSE CALL
It all began one late fall day, no one knows the exact time or day, but two German Shepherd puppies decided to go on an adventure. An abandoned and collapsed pool looked fun. In the pool a little water–oops, we can’t get out. What will we do? Several days later, maybe even a week, a law officer arrives on the scene to investigate dogs that had been abandoned. After looking all around, he somehow stumbles upon 2 starving, emaciated puppies near death, in a pool that was partially collapsed. He retrieves them and heads for 12 Hills Dog Rescue. There they were given good food to build them up and lots of soft words of assurance. After several weeks and lots of care—2 beautiful Shepherd puppies are ready for their next adventure. We named them Bonnie and Clyde. Bonnie is outgoing and Clyde is just a little more shy.
Now you want to know the rest of the story? The dogs that were reported abandoned on the property were never found. Where did Bonnie and Clyde come from? Were they abandoned also, and left to die? Or were they two puppies from a neighboring house on an adventure gone bad? We may never know and Bonnie and Clyde can’t tell us. What we do know is that they were saved, thanks to a very kind man, and that they are well again and ready for new adventures with a loving forever family.

A Pittie the Sack Is Almost Empty!
The Puppies Take After Their Mom
What breed is she? Katie is a mystery to us as far as the breed goes. She is short-legged and very stocky built. I just thought she was over fed, but it appears her puppies have all the same traits. They are short-legged and will have a dense undercoat, and they are very plump. Actually, one looks like a bulldog –but I doubt if that is actually their breed. Regardless–they are adorable and have started eating and drinking on their own. They still have a couple weeks to go before they can be adopted–so it should be close to Christmas. The picture was taken a week ago—Will share another updated on soon.
More room is coming!
More excitement on the farm. We are building a new kennel for all the dogs at 12 Hills. I am told that 10 kennels will fit on the south. they will have dog door with outside kennels. The floors will be heated, so the dogs should be comfortable all winter. Hoping to get it finished and the dogs moved in before the weather turns bad. These are pictures of the progress.
Be Patient and Count Your Blessings
Patience and blessing go hand in hand at 12 Hills Dog Rescue. Speaking of numbers–7 dogs were adopted to good homes this past weekend. We had such a slow summer that we were worried. But, just as in life when things don’t go as we hope they would, if we wait patiently–things will change for the better. The month of November we have been blessed with 21 adoptions so far. We are hoping for at least 5 more before the end of the month. I wish I could say I always have patience with the doggies in the house. Right now we have too many, and we seem to be always house training one or two. Patience and Pee Wee go hand in hand. Pee Wee is a good boy–he uses the pet door and is never in the way. But . . . he doesn’t want me to love him or pet him. He is shy and wants to be on the outer circle until he can trust us. I need to be patient and wait until the right family comes that will love him and bring him out of his shell. He is a keeper!
We are Blessed
This is the time of the year that we look back and count our blessings. 12 Hills has had so many blessings this year, it is hard to count them all. We have been blessed with so many wonderful, loving dogs to care for. Dogs that needed love and some special attention., sometimes medical. We have had some great volunteers this year. From a local 4-H club to a young Mom who did our photography and this blog. Family–who pitch in weekly to help in various ways. Note the picture of our granddaughter who worked almost every day this summer. Friends have made posters, given supplies. Then there have been those who have adopted our dogs–shared their talents with homemade blankets, kerchiefs, and even monies to help purchase supplies. Last our new fixture, Brenda . . . she works over her allotted time and goes the extra distance for each one of the dogs. Yes, we have had our hands full. Sometimes, we wanted to even throw our hands up—but in the end, WE ARE BLESSED!
Another New Mama
Katie was pretty heavy when she arrived at 12 Hills Dog Rescue. You might say she was very overweight. I guess a steady diet of powdered eggs could do that to you. Well, I was right —I diagnosed she was pregnant also, besides being overweight. Poor Katie–before she had her puppies—we were scared she would burst at the seams. Well, 5 puppies later, she is starting to regain her shapely figure. One of the puppies didn’t make it, but we have 4 of the cutest little ones. 2 tan like their Mom, and 2 little black ones with white on the tips of their toes. What a good Mama she is—and enjoys having us visit and pet her and the puppies. They are almost 2 weeks old and their eyes should open soon. We will keep you updated with pictures.
Here is Snowball—the new Mama!
What a good mom she is–to her 6 little Lab puppies. We think Snowball is part Lab herself. She is a very sweet gal and has done an amazing job with her little puppies. She works hard to keep the weight on. After all raising 6 puppies is a BIG job for such a petite little gal. Her puppies are eating on their own and we will have a picture soon of their messy faces. They will be ready for new homes in 2 weeks, and then Snowball can concentrate on finding her new forever family.
Coonhound Speaks
Wow—dogs have been on lock down for a couple days while they pour cement for the new kennel. Dogs are upset as they usually go for their evening run each night. The one doggie that is speaking out the most about his displeasure is Jethro the coonhound. His baying and cries can be heard for miles. Well, at least maybe 2 miles. He is one upset dog and tells the world. Jethro is such a cool guy. We received him from animal control and wondered why noone is claiming him. He was well taken care of –so know he was someone’s special friend.
Speaking of special friend–Jethro would make a great friend for a family. He likes to hang out with you and will even ride if you ask him. I couldn’t resist this picture. Oh, Jetro, what a big tongue you have All the better to lick you with. . . . .
Look at the Newest Puppies
What cute little things they are. So bright eyed and fat with beautiful thick white hair. Their Mom is a Lab mix and we think these are labs also. Some are light tan and others have tan spots on top of the white coat. They are only 3 weeks old—so need to wait a few more weeks before placing them on our adoption list. Will keep you posted of their progress.
LET’S TALK TURKEY!
Imagine you have heard that phrase before. I don’t really want to talk about turkeys, no, I want to talk about SURRENDERING your pet. Why do people continually feel they need a dog or a cat, and then end up surrendering them to animal control? I have heard all the excuses. I don’t have time for them, they shed too much, they have fleas, they go to the bathroom everywhere, I can’t afford to feed them etc. etc.
We have been on the other end of surrendering. Too many dogs are coming to our rescue, through surrender. That causes our numbers to go too high, and we end up keeping dogs at 12 Hills longer than we should. I used to think it was wrong to charge a fee for someone who needs to surrender their pet. NOT ANY LONGER! A fee makes it harder for people to surrender. If they bring a dog into their home, their family, they need to be responsible and care of it. SURRENDERING is not the answer–IT IS THE EASY WAY OUT! 12 Hills is here to help you keep your pet. We will do all we can to assist you, and hipe more families keep their pets forever.
Having a dog or any pet requires committment. When you adopt a dog, you are saying that they are part of your family. You have chosen them
Are you looking for a BIG DOG???
Nyla was all ears when she was a puppy. She is quite the unique doggie. She is a gorgeous white color, with just a hint of cream on her back. She is extra large in size, and each of her eyes are a different color. Not just the eye itself, but the outline of her eye. Nyla is a very powerful and loving doggie, and needs to be with an owner that can handle her when she goes for her walks. She would do best in a home with just one dog. Nyla is spayed and is one year old, and ready for an adventure with her new forever family.
Each Dog Has Their Own Unique Personality
It never fails to amaze me how different each dog is. Not just in size, color or breed, but in personality and temperment. Mike came in–with a chip on his shoulder, but after being here for a month, getting neutered, he is changing right before our eyes. Don’t get me wrong–Mike can still have an attitude, but now he enjoys everyone and has his own special way of winning us over.
Dogs can be jealous, just like people. They can butt in on conversations, just like children. They can be there for us when we are sad or sick to lend support and unconditional love. Mike is all of those!!!! If you think you may want a closer look at Mike–contact 12 Hills Dog Rescue on Petfinder.com
We Call Her Ug For Short!
Sugar is her real name, but I must say—she was one ugly little gal when she first came to 12 Hills Dog Rescue. Even though she isn’t ugly any longer—I thought I would share her story and picture for this special week–“dogs that are hard to adopt”.
Actually, Sugar is a 5 month old white doggie, that has little ears that fold over. What breed is that you say??? We don’t know. She also has a slim nose and small head. Her body is large and she is a pretty creamy white. Such a sweet girl—and smart to boot. So, think about some of the doggies that are just a little different looking—and take a look at Ug or SUGAR—on petfinder.com.
WHY THE NAME OF SUGAR???

Sugar is sweet—that’s why! Sugar is a year old black female Great Dane. She has been surrendered to 12 Hills Dog Rescue. Her story is that—she was too big for the little 2 and 5 year old kids to play around. Her name was Sugar, so we kept it. She is big—but she is gentle, loving and patiently waiting to get out of her kennel and find her new forever family. She will be one year old on October 2nd.
Sugar has gained some weight and looking good. We will have a picture of her soon. Yeah!!! Sugar was adopted on Sunday the 13th to a nce family. We are so happy for them both.
We Never Seem to Run Out of Puppies
Heelers and Helpers— After you have 5–7 week old Heeler puppies, you definitely could use the help. The first week we had them, the noise was unbearable. They have gotten used to us now and are so much calmer. Jordan, Ace, Dakota and Trill are so cute and have unigue sets of spots so we can tell them apart.
OH, ABOUT THE HELP–Well, 12 Hills has been fortunate to find a super gal to help us out. She loves dogs, and knows how to take care of them in just the right way. Oh, we are blessed to have her for our rescue. Thanks Brenda!
Rambo Has a New Home
What an exciting day for us and for Rambo. A wonderful couple from South Dakota chose Rambo to take home on their farm. Well, actually Rambo chose them. He was so excited to meet them, and you could tell the timing was perfect.
Rambo will be called Buck, after the Nebraska author–Pearl Buck.
Thanks to Buck’s new parents for choosing him and we hope that he will fit in nicely with your other pets.
Puppies Galore!
We at 12 Hills love puppies, but this is a little much. Both of the females we rescued have new puppies. Lady (beautiful German Shepard) had 7. Most look like her, but probably are mixed.
Missy the Heeler Mix had 11 and so far 10 have survived. One little one came in the house last night and we are attempting to bottle feed. That is work, but if she makes it, it will be very worth while.
YOUNG VOLUNTEERS TO THE RESCUE
We had such a special Saturday morning. The H-Troop 4-H Club came to the rescue, not only bring gifts for the dogs, but stayed several hours and volunteered. We had youth walking dogs, washing dogs, brushing and playing with dogs. Parents and leaders were present to help with the busy time and lots of interaction and socialization happened for the dogs and the youth.
The three little puppies seemed to be the biggest hit and look so sweet in their new collars. They were carried and loved and even placed on leashes to walk, or at least the attempt was made. After a fun Hot dog Roast, everyone posed for pictures with their favorite dog.
Almost Time for the Pictures!
I can’t wait to peek in and see the difference. Our little ones Pretzel, Pinky, and Peanut and growing and healing and their hair is growing back beautifully. I have pictures of what they looked like when we received them, but not sure anyone would want to see them. So sad, but these little guys are always happy.
Watch and soon, these little ones will be on this blog, as well as our Petfinder account.
New Camera–better pictures soon!
My daughter says we buy way too many cameras. Think this new one will have faster shutter speed and that will make it easier to take pictures of the doggies we get in.
Look for new pictures soon.
Busy Days!
Running a dog rescue is hard work. We are finding out that there is not enough hours in the day on most days. Between cleaning the kennels and seeing to each dogs individual needs there is all the work that goes with taking pictures, placing them on Petfinder.com and yes, PAPERWORK.
We look forward to the day when people in our area, will be more educated on the care of their pets.
That will be less work for us, and most important–dogs and cats will be healthier and happier with families who know how to properly care for them.
Blue Heelers to the Rescue
Wow–It seems that Blue Heelers are the breed of choice this Spring. We have 2 beautiful heelers, one red and one blue. Both Spuds and Rambo are males and are beautiful dogs.
Then along came— 2 Blue Heeler puppies. One was adopted already, but Sally is still waiting. Here she is!!
