Prayers for Sweet Cara

I don’t ask very often, but today I decided I wanted to visit with you about a special doggie gal that is in need of prayers. Cara is a 3 year old Boxer Mix female, and is with us at 12 Hills Dog Rescue. Her story is the same as many others. She had puppies at a young age, and wasn’t given the proper care and nutrition needed. She was brought here to the rescue and we adopted her to a young college couple. She developed a sore on her back side and after taking her to a nearby Vet, they knew that she needed more care than they could provide.

This same very special Vet performed surgery and removed a very large “Mast Tumor.” We found out a week later that the tumor was malignant stage 3. So, we brought her home and gave her the medication that would help her through the days ahead. Our thoughts were to make her as comfortable and happy as we could in the short time she had left. We noticed that the tumor had spread, but Cara seems to be healthy, happy and have a good appetite. Today she was scheduled back to the Vet Clinic to have her stitches removed and visit more about her prognosis. After some discussion we made the decision to give surgery one more try, and continue with some medication and some holistic treatment. Cara will have surgery to remove the 2 remaining tumors on Monday the 31st.

We are asking that you lift Cara up in your prayers in the days ahead. God listens to our prayers. Here is a picture of her.

WOULDN’T IT BE NICE???

As I sit at the computer this morning, my thoughts go to the new year. Chuck and I always review what we accomplished during the past year and set goals for the new one. I find myself dreaming of the ideal situation that I would like at 12 Hills Dog Rescue. That would be: More funds, more workers (volunteers and paid), more exposure to the outside world with better publicity and photographs. Less time for Chuck, and Nola spent in the day to day upkeep and cleaning of the kennels and just a little more time to relax and enjoy life on the farm, our family, and just maybe another short vacation. Then of course, I think of Brenda, (what would we do without her), she needs more help in the kennels and more time to spend training dogs that have been abused and neglected.

So, we plan on filing for a 501c3 status as soon as possible, and plan to make this our number one priority for 2015. Then we will be off and running, and hopefully our new status will allow us to complete the goals we have for this new year.

Wouldn’t it be nice, if that happened? Wouldn’t it be nice if some of our doggies that have been here for so long finally find good families? What if Peaches and Maggie Mae found their families this year?Then there is Sugar, Iris, Amos and more that need to find their forever families. Now that is a dream, I am holding on to for 2015 and forever!

Bay is a beauty testimony of how a dog can experience healing, if given love and time. In other words, “don’t give up!” Bay came to us, so fearful that she was scary to be around. After several months of training and loving attention, she now loves people and knows that she doesn’t have to be afraid any longer.
Bay especially loves women, and kids, and is fine with men after she knows them.
She is house-trained,spayed and has had all her vaccinations. A beautiful black and white gal, that needs love, reassurance and a new forever family. If you are interested, give us a call and we will invite you to come and meet Bay for yourself.

It Will Be A BLUE Christmas Without You

If Blue could sing, I imagine he would be singing, “It will be a blue Christmas without you.” Blue has waited so long. If I looked on the calendar, I would say he has been waiting for over 2 years for that wonderful home. He came to us as a puppy. You would be shocked, to see the pictures we have of what he looked like then. He was full of mange and starving, and look at him now.

Actually, that picture was taken awhile ago, but he is even more handsome and more muscled now. Blue may be a strong dog, but he is a big baby, and some of the other dogs, seem to sense that. When he is out of his kennel with them, he gets picked on. So, usually we only let him and a couple of his close buddies out at the same time.
Blue is a lover–not a fighter, so the story that all Pits are vicious is just not true. He loves to romp and play and of course, playing with people is what he enjoys the most.
So, if you like the breed, and looking for a new family member, just call us and come on and meet Blue. He has been waiting for too long.

Taking a Second Look

It’s been 2 months since I have been in the outside dog kennel, because of health issues. Yesterday was my first day back, and I was greeted and loved like I had never left. As I was cleaning kennels and talking to each one of the doggies, I was able to take a second look at each of them. Why have they been waiting so long? Is it because they are bad dogs, or do they have different personalities and quirks, just like you and me?

Max—came out of his kennel and ran around and loved us and we were his very best friends, and yet when he meets some people he is frightened, and comes across as a vicious dog. Well, he’s not. He will need a family, that can gently assure him that he is loved. A family that can see his potential. A handsome black Lab that needs a home.

Hunter, a big boy that has so much love to give, and he is still here? Why, is he overlooked? I don’t know. He loves people, kids, Just a handsome boy!

Iris, the pug mix–she is a smaller sized—medium dog, with a cute little pug face, and is black with a white blaze. She just needs a family!

Moochie–is always overlooked, and why? He is friendly, loves people and kids and has plenty of energy to go on walks with you each day, or can settle down and lay beside your feet and just be. He is neutered, and has a shiny black coat and white socks to boot! He is one of “Chuck’s Picks”

Red–My Baby! What a sweet boy–but looks pretty scary in his pictures. Red, has had a very tough life, before coming here, but he is always ready for a big hug and love, when I open his kennel door. He just needs a single person, or a couple that like big dogs. He is leash trained, neutered, and now needs a home where he doesn’t have to duck when talked to.

I spent some time loving Trina and found she has this sadness about her. Her eyes just talked to me and I wanted to cry. She was adopted once and we found she wants to be the only dog. That’s it–just doesn’t want to share your time with another dog. Yet, she is loving and very loyal. A couple would be perfect for her.

Frank, oh could I tell your stories about Frank! He hasn’t been with us as long as the others, but had some issues with chewing his toes. We think he had been hurt and had some nerves that needed to repair themselves.
Well, he is a handsome black dog with floppy years. Yes, he is going to be a big boy. He is a Great Dane mix. He needs a home that is active, so he can get the exercise he needs. He too, could use some training and at this time should probably be the only dog in the family. At least no other males. He is still under a year.

Magic, is so beautiful, with her jet black coat and white blaze on her chest. Magic also has white socks, is a large gal, and is probably a lab mix. She is a little on the shy side at first, and you have to earn her trust. Otherwise she loves your hugs and kisses. Magic was in a home with a single mother and 2 teen boys, so I think older kids would fit the bill for her.

Hamlet, has so much love to give, and just wants you all to himself! He should be the only dog in the family, and will probably not do well with cats. He has some heeler in his background, we are guessing.

Speaking of cats, we found out the hard way, that Pete does not like cats. Pete was adopted to a farm family, who loved him, but with his prey drive (he is a bird dog), the cats on the farm were in trouble.
But, Pete, needs a second chance with a family that doesn’t have cats. He loves to run and hunt and his nose is always to the ground, when he is out of his kennel. He is loving and loyal and has a special blue wire coat and is neutered.

Well, these are only a few of the dogs, that we have here at 12 Hills Dog Rescue. They need a “Second Chance” to find their home and their family.
There are others, like Bugsy, Danny Boy, Harley, Chico, Omaha, Pearl, Katie and more! Maybe YOU could be the family to give one of these or one of the others, I haven’t mentioned yet, that “Second Chance” for happiness and a loving family to boot.

Just maybe, I will have time in the next few days for some new pictures. Or I can dream a little, and hope that a volunteer, who loves to take photos happens by.

Senior Month at 12 Hills Dog Rescue

I was looking at Petfinder.com and saw a help article on posting for senior dogs. November is “Senior Dog” month for pet lovers and those of us in the rescue business.
Typically every day is senior month at the rescue. It seems we always have a few seniors residing there, and some will be here for the rest of their lives. It is a good time to share about the rewards that senior dogs can give us. AND–there some, I listed just a few.

1. They aren’t puppies! Puppies get in to everything and they require lots and lots of your attention.
2. Seniors like to have fun, but it is usually in short bursts and they just want to hang out with you
3. Sometimes they are already trained, and so the hard work is done
4. MOST OF ALL–THEY JUST WANT YOU TO LOVE THEM!

Of course, we know there is a downsides to having a senior dog, but that is another posting. Here are some of the seniors we have had and some that are still waiting at 12 Hills.

Patty–a good ole gal, that has a skin condition. She loves all visitors that comes to 12 Hills.

I have so many more that I could post, and my thoughts go to our 2 wonderful family members that passed in the last year—Squirt and Daisy–we will cherish the good times and great memories we had with you both over the years!!!

Volunteers are Needed!

I have been thinking about the surrounding shelters and all the volunteers they are blessed with- one had 60 dogs and 30 volunteers. That is wonderful, but I am left- wondering–where are our volunteers?? Maybe no one realizes we need help. So here is it! We Need Volunteers!
Chuck is down in the back, and with 3 people running the rescue and over 60 dogs, we could use some help. Dogs need brushed, walked, bathed, fed and etc.
We wish we could find volunteers to work with the some of the dogs that are socially behind–those that need to trust again. We could use volunteers to photograph, and write articles about us. Make us a video for U-tube.

We have a needs list—At least 12 to be neutered, and 5 to be spayed. No funds to do that at this time, so maybe there is someone out there who could sponsor a dog–and help with the the spay/neuter expense. In the next month, Nola will be out of commission for some time—recovering from surgery, so we need to get our numbers down and yes, we need you to volunteer.

So, yes—we need you–to volunteer—we welcome volunteers—we are thankful for them. Call us if you want to volunteer. We are on facebook, and we have our own web page at 12hillsdogrescue.org.

Full, is what we are–here at 12 Hills Dog Rescue. Seems the dogs are coming out of the shadows, right before the weather turns cold. I imagine it will only get worse.
So I wanted to update you on the dogs waiting for their forever families. We have the small ones, Isaac, Jackie, and Zoe. We have the small to medium–Buttercup or Sister, as she is called. We have a new little terrier that arrived yesterday, and we will have pictures of her soon.

These are just a few of the small ones that are available. Call us at 12 Hills Dog Rescue for an appointment to meet the little ones, the medium ones, and the large and xtra-large doggies we have at the rescue.

This Time of Year We Consider our Blessings

Here on the farm–where 12 Hills Dog Rescue is located–we are so thankful for the year 2012. Not only the blessings we have received as a family, but as owners and operators of 12 Hills.

I was looking at my Facebook page and so many are saying what they are thankful for each day of the month. I look out my window and see all the blessings given to us from our Creator. I also see all the doggies that need homes yet. Sometimes being a dog rescue is very overwhelming. It seems to take first place over other organizations and causes. The reason is because, these dogs count on us to feed, care and love them, every day. There are no days off–they have to eat–their kennels cleaned, etc. It is OK though, we love what we are doing–and we will continue as long as we can. Now to get back to the thankfulness of this message.

We are so thankful, that God put this mission on our hearts, and that we have met so many wonderful people this past year. We can’t begin to name all of them. The great people that adopted our dogs comes to mind. So many nice families have come through here this year. To date we have adopted out almost 150 dogs to good families so far and the year isn’t over yet. What a wonderful blessing that is!!

So, even if we didn’t name you personally, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the blessings we have been given from each of you. Thank–you for Caring and Sharing in 2012!

Road Trip With Some Doggies for Pet Day at TSC

Quite a road trip with 5 dogs, but we enjoyed our time at Tractor Supply in Fremont. The employees there couldn’t be kinder to us and the dogs, and even better— they network.

Three grandchildren accompanied us, and helped by holding the leashes and caring for the bigger dogs. The day was a little breezy and chilly, but we were able to meet some nice people and adopted out 1 puppy (Theodore) and Casper-(a collie mix). What is neat about these “Pet Days” is that we are able to hand out our cards and invite people to visit 12 Hills Dog Rescue.

The next one we attend we will set up inside–so watch for us there in November!

Oh, and I can’t forget–I was excited to meet the Parrot Rescue person, Roberta. She works hard saving parrots and other birds that are neglected or surrendered.

What?? The Tail End You Say???

You may have heard the expression—he or she is always on the tail end. Well, we have a number of doggies that are in that same spot. Cracker is the last of Freckle’s litter–Tippy, the last of Mona’s, and Maggie Mae the last of Jerrie’s litter. We also have some adult dogs that are still with us, because they are were the last of their litter to be adopted.

That doesn’t mean they aren’t great dogs, it just means the right person hasn’t met them yet. So, we are hoping you look at some of our “Tail End Doggies” when you are looking on our website on Petfinder.com We have so many dogs right now and we haven’t found one bad dog in the group.

By the way—if you like Boxer’s we have Choco–a purebred male, Chloe a boxer/lab, Chico & Harley, Boxer/Lab/Chow mix, and Lilah, a boxer/Chow. That is the most boxers we have ever had at 12 Hills, and they are all spayed or neutered, had all vaccinations and ready for their new homes. Take a look and give us a call.

Neuter Day at 12 Hills

Another 2 males are done–neutered that is. Now they should be ready for their new families and forever homes. It seems that their attitudes become so much calmer after their surgery. Sometimes it takes almost a month to see the difference, and sometimes it happens in a few days.Regardless, both Maximus and Kevin had their surgery today and will hopefully be adopted in the near future.

There are some who believe that male dogs should never be neutered, but we see a huge difference in dogs after the hormones settle down. Now if we could get others in the community to spay and neuter their pets–all would be good.
