Rocket—-The Italian Greyhound

Just was on a website that had tons of information about Italian Greyhounds. I wanted to make sure that when Rocket finds his forever home, it will be exactly the right one for him.  Rocket came to us from a local Animal Control.  He was picked up and his family didn’t pay the fine that would have gotten him home.  That is a familiar story here at 12 Hills Dog Rescue.  We named this little guy, Rocket because he was so fast.  A beautiful boy, black and white and 12″ at the front shoulder. Rocket was neutered recently and has had all his vaccinations.  He still is a little thin, but know the breed is supposed to be on the slim and trim side.

Rocket is close to 2 years and is very lovable and likes to sit on your lap and give hugs and kisses.  He needs a home where he can get his daily exercise, but still be where it is warm when cold weather comes.  He needs a home with a family that understands this breed and all that is unique about them.  We want him to go to his new family before it gets much colder. If you like Italian Greyhounds–call us at 12 Hills Dog Rescue.

Another Exciting Adventure!

Saturday, Sept. 29th turned out to be an exciting day for dogs and volunteers alike.  We were invited to bring some of our dogs to TSC (Tractor Supply) in Fremont, NE.  We started a little later than we hoped, but had dogs, kids, adults, and everything packed.  EXCEPT the lunch that I left sitting in a cooler in our dining room.  Oh well, not a big deal—We were met by some of the staff at TSC and boy were we impressed. ALL of them were so friendly and so good to us.  A SPECIAL THANK-YOU to Beth, who went out of her way to see to our every need.

We took 7 dogs down —and one was adopted.  That may be disappointing to some, but we met new people and our name is out there in the Fremont community now.  We met some nice gals from the Arlington Vet Clinic. They were great neighbors and we hope to see them next time.  There were horse to ride and look at, and people to meet.

Stevie’s Furry Friends joined us for the day.  A special thanks to Stevie, Ashleigh, Dawn and Lynn for helping us network with people and sharing the fun day with us.  We hope we get to Tilden one on these days to see their animals on the farm.

Another new week is here–and another new adventure!  I wonder. . . . .

Our First Adoption Option Day at TSC in Fremont

Saturday will be a big day for us at 12 Hills Dog Rescue. We are loading up a group of doggies and heading to Tractor Supply at Fremont.  We have never done this before, so it is indeed exciting and a little scary at the same time.

Questions are:  What do we take along?  Food, water, bowls, pens, paperwork–there is always paperwork. AND we plan to take our Look at Our Dogs book, so the public can see the dogs we have that need loving homes.

I hope that the dogs are all adopted that day to loving furever homes! Is that being unrealistic or just positive?  Some may say I’m dreaming, but philoshony is hope for the best and expect it.  We may have a special visitor or 2 that day—we are hoping that Stevie from Stevie’s Furry Friends and his sister Ashleigh, and of course their Mom joins us there.  They will be bring treat bags for the dogs that are getting adopted. Not sure what is in them, but know they will each be special for the doggie.

So, if you aren’t doing anything special on Saturday the 29th—come to Frement TSC and look for 12 Hills Dog Rescue.

Autumn is Upon Us–Winter is Close Behind

Time to move the dogs inside is fast approaching. Problems?? Inside kennels are full and we need to adopt a good 15 dogs and get those numbers now. Please help us get the word out–we have beautiful social dogs here. Yes, we do have some that need more socialization, but with little love and some attention–they will be the best family dogs. Check us out on petfinder.com and 12 Hills Dog Rescue facebook, for more information.  By the way, this is Page with her new petfinder.com kerchief.  She looks beautiful in purple.

Looking for Families to Adopt Dogs in Need!

Some of the dogs at 12 Hills have been waiting for quite awhile to find their forever homes. What ever the reason is that they are still here—they would be great companions for a family. Each dog has a different personality. Some are outgoing, while others need a little more work and some special kindness.  Some are active, and some are easy going and enjoy just being with you. 12 Hills has dogs of every breed mix and personality., and we hope to find them homes before the snow starts flying.  That is why we are offering the last 2 weeks of September a special discount for some of the dogs we have that need homes.

This discount is very special–and the families receiving it must share with us how they will take care of the dog that they would like to adopt.  Those doggies are:

Pee Wee or (Pete) as we sometimes call him–2 years old, shy, needs to be worked with one on one.  Black with beautiful markings, and is neutered.
Cooper is a great dog and why hasn’t someone snatched him up. Red-cinnamon color–part lab/chow and neutered.

Cody–is a beauty and hasn’t been here long, but would make a great dog for a family.

Bounty can jump in the air 4 ft. on all fours and needs to be neutered and have rest of shots.  (Young dog)

Leroy is handsome with his white socks and is young also.  Needs neutered and rest of shots

Taxi is a little spooky yet, but will tame down if he is worked with and so adorable.  (young dog) needs shots and neutered.

Tess was with Taxi when we found them–also shy, but would come out of her shell if worked with (young dog-needs shots/neutered.)

Trixie came with Tess and is very quiet. She needs someone to show her that she can have fun and be loved (young and needs spayed/shots)

I will be posting pictures of these soon, but call and ask about the special price and remember–don’t call if you aren’t able to take care of their needs, and give them the love they need.

All Sizes–Ages–Colors–& Personalities!

Roxie is Ready

12 Hills Dog Rescue is full to the top–with  different sizes, colors, ages and sexes of doggies! From Sammy (our smallest) to Andy (Husky/Wolf) the (largest)–we have every color, size and personality waiting for their forever homes.  I wish I could show more of their personalities and about them on our Petfinder.com page.  I think perhaps 12 Hills needs their own publicity agent to take pictures, etc., as we run out of day light and energy here on the farm.

So, hopefully in the days ahead–we can post more pictures, descriptions and personality traits for the public to view.  If anyone is interested in a specific dog or breed, they can always call us at 402-846-5100.  Here are a few of the dogs we have, starting with the smallest.

Sammy!

It is Almost Time

Time for Buttons to go to the special Vet and have her surgery. We were waiting until she was a little older.  Buttons is a special girl with special needs.  She has 2 hernias, so will need to fix them and get her spayed all in the same day. Poor little thing, I can’t bear to think of her at the hospital having her surgery.  Oh well, I know Buttons will bounce right back–she is so full of energy, and can I say this? Naughty to boot!  Buttons wants to have you hold her, then chews on your hand. She is a character! When Stevie and family (from Stevie’s Furry Friends) were here, she even fetched the ball for the kids. Now that is a dog!  Buttons only weighs about 10#, but that 10# is a ball of fun and will make some family very happy. Watch for Buttons in the near future and I will try and keep everyone updated on how her surgery goes.Image

When Is Skinny Good?

Well, I guess Italian Greyhounds are supposed to be thin. But how thin?  We have a new young male–so handsome and full of energy, but I think he is a little thin. I can see his ribs and backbone–is that normal for that breed, or do we need to fatten him up a little.  Regardless, he is eating and wants out of his kennel. Tomorrow is the last day for his family to claim him, and then he goes on our adoption list.  Hope he finds a good home with a family that understand and love his breed.  I know the breed are fast for sure, and we named him Rocket.  He wants to blast out of his kennel, so you have to be fast when feeding him.  Watch for Rocket in the next week–we will have pictures and more about him soon.

Another one of Chuck’s Picks!

Lucy is adorable, full of energy, loves everyone and needs a family. She could use a family with active children that like to run and play, throw the ball, swim—whatever!  She is ready for the adventure.

Let me tell you about Lucy–she is about 6 months old and has shiny jet black hair. She is all Lab, (we are thinking) and she is healthy and just an all around great dog.  Well, we let her out of the kennel–and who did she run to?? Guess?  Chuck again! How does he do it?  She adores him and is by his side when he is outside.  She is very loyal and sweet, and Chuck said, “Now that Lucy, she is a sweetie.” It won’t be long and she will be riding in the seat next to him on the Mule (that’s our 4 wheeler). But first she will have to wait her turn. Usually Page or Kelly have that spot for now.

Take a close look at Lucy, or better yet, come and meet her. AND THAT IS WHY LUCY IS ONE OF “CHUCK’S PICKS”

A Fun Afternoon With Friends & and Family!

Today we had a visit from Stevie, Ashleigh, Dawn and Grandma Lynn. Stevie from Stevie’s Furry Friends, and his family have been at our rescue several times. What a blessing they have been for us.  We have received collars, dog beds, shampoo, biscuits, dog food, etc.  Today they came to make a fun video with the dogs and our granddaughter Kariden was here to meet them.  She made friends with Ashleigh and received a bear hug from Stevie when he left.  They seemed to have fun as they helped point out the dogs that were available for adoption. They left us more collars, biscuits and other goodies. The dogs loved the toys they received–especially the big ball and rope toy.
We have such great friends and volunteers.  What would we do without you all???  Thanks Stevie for bringing your family for the afternoon.  Tell Grandma that Roxie is missing her.

The Wild Ones Are Out and Being Socialized!

It was meant to be—Andre is the one socializing the 3 very shy puppies.  We had found them on the highway and brought them back to 12 Hills Rescue. They were hungry, scared and needing some tender loving care.  They were placed in an inside kennel for a few weeks and  yesterday moved them to the yard with Andre. It is ironic–because Andre was in the same stage about a month ago.  Dogs socializing dogs works wonders.

So look forward to seeing the 3 new ones in the near future!

I Love It–When a Plan Comes Together

Jack went home with his new family last night.  They had come to find a dog about 2 weeks ago and in the process they discovered Jack.  He is a Akita, Chow and German Shepherd mix.  He loves little ones and when they saw him kiss their 5 month old, they knew he was the one.  So, they went back home and started moving into their new place and when they were done–back they came for Jack.

He seemed to be happy when he left with them–except he was afraid of getting into the car.  He prefers the back seat and it was full of baby.  Anyway, we are thrilled to see Jack find such an awesome family and wishing them all the best in their new place and with their new dog.

German Shepherd Mixes–We have a number of them!

We sure do have a number of German Shepherd mixes at 12 Hills Dog Rescue. Knowing how much some of adopters have loved their German Shepherds, I thought we should put them in one place.  So here goes:  Andre, Doodles, Tater and Sadie.  They are special dogs that are just a little insecure.  What they need is a family to give them their love, their time and their home.   So call and let us know if you are interested in any of our German Shepherd mixes.

The first is Doodles, then Andre and then Tater being rocked.

CHUCK’S PICKS!

I was cleaning the kennel the other day and had a new thought.  (Hey, I do my best thinking when I am cleaning up the poo).  Chuck, (my husband and co-owner of 12 Hills Dog Rescue) takes the dogs for their nightly run witht he 4WD Mule.  The night before, he had come in and sat in the recliner to cool down. He shared with me about a certain dog that he thought was very special.  (This isn’t the first time that he has shared about dogs that he feels are very special.)  Don’t get me wrong, Chuck loves them all ,and they all seem to love him.  BUT, some endear themselves to him and he “just knows” they are special doggies.

The first dog we had in our rescue that was extra special to him, was Bee Bee. I remember him saying, “She isn’t going anywhere, unless a special person comes along that will really love and understand her.”  Well, Nancy came along and I was surprised, he let her go, even though it was hard for him.

Then there was Princess—a wonderful couple took her and now she is the Princess or Queen of their home.  These are just two of the special ones Chuck has picked. It occured to me that maybe I should share his thoughts about those special dogs.  So here goes—-Our first one is Alice. Alice is a golden lab mix.  She is a little shy, very sweet and has hair that stands up on her neck. It looks like a giant cowlick or maybe a mohawk hair cut.  She also has one foot that has a smaller toe the others,  If she has been running a lot, she may favor it a little.  Why would he fall in love with this dog? She  is a true beauty inside and out.  You just have to look into her eyes and you can see for yourself.

So, watch for “Chuck’s Picks” on our petfinder page as well as Facebook in the near future.

Should We or Shouldn’t We??? Is Non-Profit the Way to Go?

12 Hills Dog Rescue is undecided about a non-profit status. We are going to do more research and then decide.  I guess it depends on the Animal Control part that we are involved in right now. It started with a grant and the object was to save the dogs in our community.  If we don’t continue we fear that the pound in our community will return to killing the dogs after a few days.  We have heard that we could be part profit and part non-profit.  Guess that is what we should look into in the next few days.  Grants are great to help out, but when they run out, you are on your own. Why does everything involve so much paperwork???Image

Can’t Believe the Fleas We are Seeing!

Just recently had 2 dogs arrive at the rescue covered in fleas.  The little puppy even had nests of fleas and eggs in his coat.  His ears were black and he had black spots all over.  A good flea bath and treatment and we discovered he was a white lab with pretty golden ears.

To keep fleas and ticks from your dog they need to be treated with a topical flea preventive. We use Frontline and it always seem to be the most reliable.  If you don’t have money for Frontline (it isn’t cheap), a good flea shampoo will also work. Using a flea comb afterward gets out those that you may have missed and the eggs. Look on the bottle to see when you will need to shampoo your pet again.  I am thinking it is 10 days.  Spraying the area where your dog lays is another way of keeping fleas at bay.  The yard, dog beds and rugs all should be treated. Running the flea comb through your dogs coat periodically is a great way to keep on top of the flea problem.  One flea in the comb–oops–time for another bath.

BIG DOGS NEEDING LOVING FAMILIES.

Just because we are bigger, doesn’t mean we can’t be wonderful family dogs.  Gee, we have been waiting for the perfect family that will understand us. WHERE ARE THEY? Here are our pictures—call and ask about us and just maybe one of us will go home with you.

Her Face Says It All!

What a sweet gal—we named her Alice. Just one of the dogs at 12 Hills Dog Rescue that are waiting for new families. It has been so hot for all the dogs. It keeps us busy, filling water pans, baby pools, and checking to see how the dogs aImagere holding up in this heat.  Today I awoke to wet grass–it must have showered in the night. Yeah! Not much, but it seemed to energize the dogs this a.m.  Getting back to Alice–she is spayed and had her vaccinations. She has a mohawk scruff of hair on her neck. Otherwise, she looks exactly all yellow lab.  Call us if you want to meet her or her friends at 12 Hills.

WHAT ABOUT ME???

The picture seems to be saying, “What about Me?”  Carmen has been overlooked a number of times.  She is a sweet gal, a Chow Chow mix and loves people and most dogs.  She needs to find a home that will love her and take her to be spayed.  We will not be spaying for a few monthsImagebecause of the lack of funds. I can see Carmen with a family with children 8 years and up.  If you are interested, give us a call  at 402-846-5100.

Update from 12 Hills Dog Rescue—-Everything is on Hold!!!

Well, here we go–our first crisis involving funds for our rescue.  With the crops frying in the field and no rain, we cannot afford to spay and neuter any dogs for awhile.  We did 9 last month, and it pretty much drained the 12 Hills Dog Rescue account.  We will need to save our monies for food for the ones we still have.

So things are tight here, and we hope new families will adopt the doggies as they are.  We have so many sweet dogs that are very social.  This week we rescued 3 puppies that look like they are 3 months of age.  They were dumped, full of ticks and starving.  We are still trying to catch the last one, and the extreme hot weather makes it worse.  This is a picture of the little Apple heads that we took in last week. They are adorable and their hair is growing back.  They still need another week or 2, and then ready for their new families.Image,

Sweet Little Gal—Can’t You Tell???

We named her Roxie, and she came to us from a nice lady, who knew she was in trouble.  She was full of fleas and ticks and pregnant.  Roxie was treated and bathed and is now waiting for the arrival of her puppies in a few days.  She is pretty thin, but hoping for a healthy delivery and some puppies that look like their Mama.

Roxie looks a little like a Westie Mix to us–but we never know.  Look for her picture and her puppies in the days ahead.Image

Zoey and Oliver—We have our Work Cut Out for Us!

What a sad sight! 2 little mangy puppies with bloated tummies were brought to 12 Hills this past weekend. They have been bathed, treated for mange and wormed.  Now, we just need to give them the extra care they need before they can go on to their new families. Watch for them in a few weeks–When they are all better, we will place them on facebookImageand petfinder.com

What Breed is Bella?

What breed is Bella? I guess it doesn’t matter to many people.  Picking out a family member at 12 Hills, isn’t usually breed specific.  A rescue like ours takes in mostly mixed breeds that have beenImageabandoned or surrendered.  Part of the time, the doggies are on death row when they come to us, or they are in need of some tender loving care. Bella looked a little rough when we got her. She had just weaned her puppies and was ready for some needed rest and good care.  Bella is looking great now, and is ready for her new family.  Even if we are unsure of her breed—she is a beauty.

What?? The Tail End You Say???

You may have heard the expression—he or she is always on the tail end.  Well, we have a number of doggies that are in that same spot.  Cracker is the last of Freckle’s litter–Tippy, the last of Mona’s, and Maggie Mae the last of Jerrie’s litter.  We also have some adult dogs that are still with us, because they are were the last of their litter to be adopted.

That doesn’t mean they aren’t great dogs, it just means the right person hasn’t met them yet.  So, we are hoping you look at some of our “Tail End Doggies” when you are looking on our website on Petfinder.com  We have so many dogs right now and we haven’t found one bad dog in the group.

By the way—if you like Boxer’s  we have Choco–a purebred male, Chloe a boxer/lab, Chico & Harley, Boxer/Lab/Chow mix, and Lilah, a boxer/Chow. That is the most boxers we have ever had at 12 Hills, and they are all spayed or neutered, had all vaccinations and ready for their new homes.   Take a look and give us a call.Image
