More Dogs That Have Waited Long Enough

Placing a few more pictures on the blog of some of our dogs that have been with us for too long.  They are great dogs, but just never chosen.  When you have 75-80 dogs at a time it is hard to keep ahead of the ones coming in.  This is Jerry—a heeler mix. He has been neutered–and is always overlooked. He likes to be the Alpha dog–so a one or 2 dog home with older kids desired.

Jenny is a Imagegreat girl, just a little insecure, which causes her to snip at other dogs sometimes.  She should go to a farm or big back yard as one dog in the family.  She likes to protect those she loves. Image This is Blondie–(our Vet) named him after his horrible accident. Was run over and we had a hard time catching him. He had a broken collar bone and leg–was cast, but still not able to walk on all fours. He is a special needs guy, but can get around great–non shedding to boot. Loves women—a little shy.

ImageMindy has waited long enough. She is shiny black and we think a rat terrier mix.  We are guessing her at 6 months.

Bear is a character. She is a small to medium gal, and loves people. She likes to be the center of attention, and so she does get jealous of other dogs. She would make a great dog to take in a truck or just hang out with.

Mike is quite the Rat Terrier. He has an attitude to go with his cute face. He loves people, likes to be the only dog, and probably wouldn’t do well with cats or other male dogs. He needs neutered, soon. Cute as a bug!
DSCN5866 (640x480)
Bounty should have been named Bouncey, but has settled down that last few months. He is a year old, neutered and needs a home with someone to take him on walks and give him the attention he needs. His coat is so soft.
DSCN4832 (640x480)
Last but not the least–is our special girl Sophie. We have had her since she has been 7 weeks old. She was injured before she came here, but has healed and she is beautiful. Please take a second look at those big ears. We think she may have some husky and dobie in her background.

“Plea for Help”

We are overwhelmed–under staffed, and we hope to find a solution that will help us get our numbers down.  What we are asking is for other rescues, dog lovers and volunteers to assist us in finding homes for some of the dogs that have been here longer than necessary. We have large dogs—dogs of all sizes, shapes, colors and breeds.  We have young dogs, older dogs and even feral dogs.

Any ideas would be appreciated!  For instance the feral dogs, Tess, Trixie and Taxi, are not getting any tamer, because we cannot work with them. Andre needs special attention–as does Queen the female wolf/husky.

We have a number of dogs that need to be on farms, and there adoption fee will be waived.  All we want are stable, loving homes for them–long term. Not for one month or one year–but for the rest of their lives.

So if you have any ideas, know of anyone that needs or wants a dog–please don’t hesitate to call 12 Hills Dog Rescue.  We have helped other rescues in the past and hope there are rescues out there that have the space to help us out.

Thanks for reading our “Plea for Help” Photos are of Sam and Boss–just 2 of the doggies that are offered to a good forever family at a no cost adoption fee.

Shoes that Feel Good

Shoes??? Why am I talking about shoes?  I had another one of my light bulb moments—and it all started with shoes.

My daughter-in-law, Deanna was walking to our shed, and I remarked about her new shoes.  She said, “These aren’t new, but I love wearing them. So comfortable—and I can wear them all day.” “They just feel good on my feet.”

Now, I am not trying to compare doggies with shoes, so don’t get started. But, think about it.  The dog or pet of any kind should fit you. Your life style, your family, your home, etc.  And. . . . sometimes shoes need to be worn for awhile to make them feel comfortable on your feet.   So, in a way, I am comparing dogs to shoes.

Before you bring a dog into your family, you need to go over some basic facts.

  • Do I have time for a new member of the family?
  • Is my life style busy, quiet?
  • Am I patient enough for a work in progress dog, or do I need one that has no issues. Adult or puppy??

These are just a few of the questions that should come up before you adopt, or bring in a dog, into your family.  Rescue dogs are usually a little different. Just as some shoes need to be broken in when new, dogs  need time to mold to your family and way of life.  They need time to trust you, and sometimes it takes a few weeks, and even a few months.  During that time, patience and love should be administered every day.

So, what am I saying??? Ask yourself some questions, before you adopt.  Do I have time for a dog in our household? Do I need a dog for comfort, or one that is very active to match my lifestyle?  Do I have the patience needed to work with the issues that I might encounter with a rescue dog?

Just like buying a new pair of shoes—they should “Feel Good.”

ImageHere is Linus–He is an example of a dog that needs time and patience.  It takes him some time to warm up to you–and he feels safer with teens and adults, especially women. And. . . having another dog in the family makes him feel more comfortable.

BACK IN THE GROOVE

Is the term “Back in the Groove” outdated? I suppose there is a new line that I should be using to explain my weekend.  Just returned home from Family Church camp. We call it Reunion–as we see old friends and make new ones each year.  Had a great time and refreshed my body and my spirit.

Anyway, I guess I am rested–today after the kennel chores I took time to spend time with a number of the dogs.  Bathed little Albert–he is recovering from the mange. He looks an Akita, but seems pretty small yet.  I am not sure that the name Albert fits him—maybe A.J. would be better.  He is about 8 weeks old and is going to be a great looking puppy when he is recovered.

I cleaned the back yard and fixed the outside shed for the puppies.  They love the stairs to their loft. We still need to fix the window with a screen, paint the shed, and run electric so they can have a fan.  All in time, I guess!

While I was back there–spent some time with April (a lab mix puppy about 4 months old) She is very active, and shows lots of potential.  Sally Sue–a  female Jack Russell is is 3 months old. She is adorable, with a brown face and cute markings.   Judy is growing and filling out as well as Trudy. (Both look like Corgi mixes.)  Sophie was very happy to see me and followed me–sitting patiently until I petted her.  I wonder why noone has called to meet her?  She is a wonderful Rottie/Husky mix and even thought I have her listed as special needs, she gets along well.

When I arrived home I found that Shorty had been neutered–Glady’s spayed–Both Andre and Kayne neutered also.  Sometime it seems like our trips to the Vet takes up much of our days.  Getting back to Shorty–he is a Chiweenie! I am not sure how you spell it, but a chihuahua and dachshund. He is quite the character.  Both him and Oscar (a poodle/chihuahua) like to argue over who can get closer to me.

I could go on and on about the day spent with the dogs, but my bed is calling for me.  I hope that those out there that read my blog will take time to look on petfinder.com for more information about the dogs. This picture is Judy–she is a little bigger now.Image

Judy Says Hi Everyone

Image

What a cutie! Judy came full of ticks and so sick.  All better–and is full of energy. We are unsure of her lineage, but she is  going to be a small to medium dog.  Judy is still a puppy–around 4 months old.

Personalities Abound

It never fails to amaze me the different types of dogs we take in at 12 Hills Dog Rescue. I’m not just talking breeds, because most are mixed breeds, and they come in all sorts of sizes, colors and personalities. Yes, I said personalities. Now, I realize that there are people out there who don’t think that dogs have souls, but I am not one of them.  There are so many mysteries in life, and I believe the animal kingdom is one of them.

We had a wonderful visit from an Uncle and cousins yesterday. They are animal lovers also, and enjoyed everyone of the dogs they came into contact with.  Well, maybe not Kellarnie, but almost all.  Anyway, one of our conversations were about how different each dog is. Some are very loving and sweet–some are jealous, fearful, angry and sad. They experience the entire spectrum of feelings. So why not a soul, I ask? I’m not saying their soul is just like yours and mine, but a soul, nevertheless.

I think about the little dogs we have. Oscar is a poodle mix.  He can be fearful, really tough, and very much jealous, when it come to me. He will need a home with a couple that can spend time with him, and maybe one other dog.  Natalie is a jumping bean. Always seems to have boundless energy, and always wants to eat.  She is loving and sweet, but likes to be the center of attention. When she first arrived, she was lethargic and nippy—makes you think of humans that are unhappy and unhealthy. Missy is a sweetheart to any new person at the door, but she has a a temper to be reckoned with.

The outside dogs are unique in the same ways. Lucy plunges into the mix and into anything that gets in her way. Haven’t you seen people that plunge in without thinking?  Gidget and Ginger are introverts–and do better one on one–that sounds like my husband.

So, by now you probably have the picture. Dogs are unique, with personalities and we have so so many waiting to find a home that excepts them and loves them regardless.  When you adopt a dog from 12 Hills, we hope that for your sake and the dog, that you are serious. A serious owner that realizes that YOU are in charge. You have to be the one to accept, to mold and to love them as a family member.

Give us a call—look on Petfinder.com and Facebook—these “special one of a kind dogs” are waiting. By the way–the picture is Linus–a teen that is a little shy, but very devoted to family.Imageities

JUST THE WAY SHE IS!

Hi Dog Lovers,

I haven’t written a post for awhile. I think the grey weather had something to do with what I accomplished the last few weeks.  This morning as I was waiting for my first cup of coffee, I had the usual good morning greetings from the dogs that stay inside our home.  Sophie followed me from room to room, quietly waiting for some special attention and a kind word.  She has grown into a beautiful young lady (or doggie).  She has this special way of looking at you, that makes you want to run to her and tell her, that she is loved and it everything will be OK.  Sophie has a story—much like some of the other puppies that come here, but hers is unique.

We received a phone call from a woman who had 6 puppies, and they needed to find a home right away. One had been injured, and needed help.  She brought them here, and there was this little red one that was skinny and had a huge amount of swelling on her back legs. She was so pathetic, but she wagged her little broken tail and looked into our eyes, in a special way–that spoke volumes.

We found out that the little red dog had been run over a week ago, but there was no money for the Vet, so they brought her and her siblings to 12 Hills Dog Rescue for assistance.  We immediately gave our little injured gal antibiotics and in a few days the swelling was down. We took her to the Animal Hospital for xrays, and found that her femur had been broken, and it was already calloused–so no way of fixing it.  She was already compensating for the injury and was walking on it a little.  Her broken tail was docked, she was passed around to every Vet tech, and everyone remarked, that she was “ONE SPECIAL LITTLE PUPPY.”

We brought her home and a few days later, she came down with Parvo.  What a sick little gal she was!  Thanks to Chuck’s excellent care and special attention, Sophie (her new name) pulled through.

If Sophie could talk, she would tell you about those times she almost died.  What we are left with is a special needs dog, that is one in a Million!  Sophie has a wiggle in her walk–because of her broken femur. But she loves life—she loves people, and she is patiently wondering why no one has come to make her part of the family.

Did I tell you that Sophie is supposed to be a rottie mix? But she is a pretty red–with a cream mask and has large ears that stand up.  What breed? We are unsure, but we know that she needs a special family. A family that will always love her “just the way she is.”Image

IT’S THE PITS!

Oh no, not pits again!  We have several pit puppies that have been acquired through the local animal control, and need help transporting them out of our area.  They are nice doggies, but very hard to find homes in our area, as the Omaha reservation does not allow the breed.  Also neighboring communities have banned the breed and hence the bad name has stuck, and the likelihood of adopting is slim.

I know there are rescues and people out there who love the Pit breeds and we ask for your help at this time.  We are running the rescue from our farm as a labor of love.  Our rescue has grown over the past and the love is there, but the labor is overwhelming.

We are not asking for monies–but transportation help and for good families to adopt these little puppies.  You can find us online at Petfinder.com and on 12 Hills Dog Rescue on Facebook.  Give us a call at 402-846-5100.

We love them all—-but life can sometimes become overwhelming and the PITS!

In Memory of
Squirt was his name–and he was “One In A Million”. We lost our boy about a month ago, and I guess I need to stop looking in the ditches and fields, as I make my way to the highway. It is time to say good-bye to him and to thank him for the 14 special years we had together.
Squirtie (as we called him) came into our lives when he was just a puppy. He quickly became “our son”, as the rest of the family called him. I think they were just a little jealous–that he was so special to us. When Chuck had surgery, he never left his side–staying almost glued to his body–during those rough days. He would just jump up and curl up next to you–giving you that healing touch that he could do so well. He always seem to know when we were sick, grieving or just tired. I remember him even offering his special healing to Grandma–when she was so ill. Of course she didn’t let him jump up, but I think she appreciated it anyway.

He wasn’t much of a camper, and sometimes created a scene, because he didn’t like being on a leash or tie out in a camping area. He was too important for that–or at least he thought he was. He did love to go for rides and would sit on the console looking for deer or other animals that would catch his eye.

Squirt had his own birthday parties–even sharing one or two with our daughter-in-law. Of course he always got his own cupcake and special treat. He just knew it was his special day and he would hold his head high and soak it up.

Squirt always met everyone at the door with his bottom half wagging. His tail had been docked so short, he just moved his entire hips. Over the years, he went from his slim self to being a “little overweight”, but that didn’t stop his enthusiasm for life.

There are so many memories that I could share—even him sitting on a chair at the table—waiting for his bites—he was “One in a Million.”—and I thank our Creator–for allowing us to be his family for all those years.

Good-bye–my little man—we will miss you—just know you were loved!

Behind the Bars

After I wrote the last blog, it occurred to me, that I could just place some of the pictures on the blog and Facebook as they are; behind bars. That is a fact of life, and of course, they would rather be out and about, and we would hope that they will be adopted soon. We have all sizes, colors, breeds ages—the list goes on. Each dog has a story–and many of the stories will pull your heart-strings. That is why we are here–to love them–to help them heal, physically and socially–and sometimes mentally. It is a hard job. When you have a success; and see a dog that was broken, turn around and find happiness and love with a new family, it is worth it.

So, take a good look at the dogs that I am posting—“Behind the Bars.” If you see one, that might interest you, contact us and we will do our best to take another picture.

By the way, thanks for taking the time to read and look at some of our dogs.

The Super Bowl is Over–Let’s Get Down to Business!

What Did You say--I'm All Ears!

What Did You say–I’m All Ears!

The dogs at 12 Hills Dog Rescue–wanted me to tell everyone they enjoyed the Super Bowl, but think it is time that all dog lovers get back to business.  What business you ask??  The business of finding just the right dog for your family at 12 Hills.  There are all ages, sizes, colors and breeds.  There are puppies, young dogs, adults and senior dogs. There are puppies–like Bob (the 9 week old shepherd mix–with the bob-tail).  Sophie the cute husky/rottie mix with a bob-tail. There is Toto,(2yrs) and Larry, Vinnie, Isaiah and Shorty. Now those are just the lap doggies.  We have 2 female 8 week old Bassett type pups. Also, there are 6 Rottie mix puppies that will be ready in a week or so.  This is the most small breed dogs we have had, for some time. We have a number of medium sized dogs, large dogs and several extra large dogs.  Gidget and Ginger, Corgi/Lab sister are looking for a new home where they can be together. They have been spayed, had vaccinations and ready to love a new family. There are too many dogs to mention. Maybe, it would be easier for you to call and make an appointment to visit 12 Hills. You may find—just the right dog to complete your family.

I Wonder???

I wonder, do dogs get the winter blahs? Especially those waiting for their forever families? I know that the cold and grey days of winter can take its toll on people. I am a sunshine person, and after a few rainy days or grey days I feel the blahs coming on.  At 12 Hills the dogs get their exercise every day.  Last night when Chuck took the 16 out for their nightly run, I just shook my head.  The dogs were even ready to come in and go to their heated kennels. Sometimes my husband amazes me with his dedication to the dogs we find.  All sizes, shapes and breeds—it doesn’t matter, he does his best to make their stay a good one, and to help them prepare for their new families.

Yes, I do think dogs get the winter blahs, They need an extra love pat, a hug, maybe a biscuit and some kind words. It doesn’t take much and they love it all.  Wouldn’t it be great if people were more

Fluffy is ready for some lovin!

Fluffy is ready for some lovin!

like that?

What did I do, they seem to be saying?

Poor little things–brought to us on Sunday evening. Family couldn’t keep, because of allergies. What sad and confused little dogs they are. Their eyes almost are saying–“What did I do wrong?”12-3-2012 03812-3-2012 035

Shorty and Izzy are both Chi-Chi mix. Izzy is mixed with a Min-pin, and Shorty with a Dachshund. If you know of anyone looking for a lap dog–they would be perfect.  Call if you are looking for a lap dog–they will be perfect.

Tis the Season!

Yep, it is the season for shopping and buying gifts and preparing for the next holdiday, Christmas.  We had a wonderful Thanksgiving here at 12 Hills Dog Rescue. The weather was beautiful and everyone enjoyed their run to the pasture with Chuck on the 4wd Mule.  Now, tis the season for some cooler weather, and we worry just a little more about the dogs. Are they warm enough? Will we adopt any large doggies out, so they don’t have to weather this cold?

Elvis is one of our worries.  The 5 year old hound/pointer mix is such a good boy, and has seen his share of bad days.  Elvis will need a nice warm house or shed to curl up in to face those cold winter days.

A little about Elvis—he is a great boy, and I mean great big boy. His head is like a hound, his tail moves constantly—and he spent the first 5 years of his life on a chain.  When we picked him up, he was full of fleas and their eggs and was covered in blood.  His heart worm test was positive, but Vet said he is mending and getting rid of them, with the monthly treatments we give him.  He is put on weight nicely, and just needs a family to give the love and care he deserves. I can’t say enough about what an awesome dog Elvis is.  The family that adopts him, will need to past the “Elvis Test”.  So enjoy looking at those BIG brown eyes and give us a call if you are interested.

This Time of Year We Consider our Blessings

Here on the farm–where 12 Hills Dog Rescue is located–we are so thankful for the year 2012. Not only the blessings we have received as a family, but as owners and operators of 12 Hills.

I was looking at my Facebook page and so many are saying what they are thankful for each day of the month. I look out my window and see all the blessings given to us from our Creator.  I also see all the doggies that need homes yet.  Sometimes being a dog rescue is very overwhelming. It seems to take first place over other organizations and causes.  The reason is because, these dogs count on us to feed, care  and love them, every day. There are no days off–they have to eat–their kennels cleaned, etc. It is OK though, we love what we are doing–and we will continue as long as we can. Now to get back to the thankfulness of this message.

ImageWe are so thankful, that God put this mission on our hearts, and that we have met so many wonderful people this past year.  We can’t begin to name all of them.  The great people that adopted our dogs comes to mind. So many nice families have come through here this year. To date we have adopted out almost 150 dogs to good families so far and the year isn’t over yet.  What a wonderful blessing that is!!

So, even if we didn’t name you personally, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the blessings we have been given from each of you.  Thank–you for Caring and Sharing in 2012!

LOOKING FOR A MATURE/OLDER DOG??

12 Hills may have the boys you are looking for.  We recently picked up Bear and Dallas and they definitely need a loving family that enjoys older dogs.  We know they are friendly, but not sure about how kid friendly.  Sometimes older doggies, like to have their space from the little ones, and others love the special attention.  Both Bear and Dallas, came to us because they were abandoned.  Their family is in another state in poor health, and a kind neighbor has been caring for them.

Bear and Dallas miss their Mom and Dad and it is our hope that they will find a new family soon.  We will be taking better pictures soon, but will include the ones we have from their first day.  They let us carry them and were happy to be here with people who care.  By the way–Bear is the bigger one and he is 10 years, Dallas (not his real name) is 7 years old. Both great boys!

ARE WE FAMOUS YET???

I want to tell you about some exciting news we have. 12 Hills Dog Rescued was featured in a video by Stevie’s Furry Friends. The name of the video is “Adopt Me Maybe”. Stevie and Ashleigh’s mom, Dawn, did a wonderful job making this video. To date we have had over 4,000 views on You Tube.  The video is filmed here, at 12 Hills, and features some of our dogs and puppies, along with sobering facts about dog neglect/abandonment. If you find time in your busy day, you might want to go on You tube and check it out. You will need to press “like” if you want to vote for us.  The contest will be over on the 31st.

Road Trip With Some Doggies for Pet Day at TSC

Quite a road trip with 5 dogs, but we enjoyed our time at Tractor Supply in Fremont.  The employees there couldn’t be kinder to us and the dogs, and even better— they network.

Three grandchildren accompanied us, and helped by holding the leashes and caring for the bigger dogs.  The day was a little breezy and chilly, but we were able to meet some nice people and adopted out 1 puppy (Theodore) and Casper-(a collie mix).  What is neat about these “Pet Days” is that we are able to hand out our cards and invite people to visit 12 Hills Dog Rescue.

The next one we attend we will set up inside–so watch for us there in November!

Oh, and I can’t forget–I was excited to meet the Parrot Rescue person, Roberta. She works hard saving parrots and other birds that are neglected or surrendered.

Last Week Was a One I Don’t Want to Repeat

A very sad week at 12 Hills Dog Rescue.  I had to make a trip to the Veterinary with an old friend. It was Zohnny’s last ride in the pickup and her life on earth ended that day.  Zohnny was around 11 years, a chocolate lab that we had been caring for for 2 years.  She was a tough gal, and had such bad fungus in her ears when she arrived that they were deformed on the inside.  It was an ongoing condition that we treated, but she always remained happy and ready for her ride on the 4wd Mule.  A few months ago, she developed a huge bump on the side of her head. The Vet said it was cancer and we would know when it was time to let her go.  He said it would probably be a fast growing.  Well, Zohnny  just kept going, kept eating and never appeared to be in pain. The bump went down for a while and then came back and we could tell it was time.

I will never forget that pickup ride and the sadness I felt.  WHAT A SPECIAL DOG! She had a very strong spirit and could teach us all something about perseverance. I know she is in a special place without pain, maybe riding with someone on their 4wheeler.
